The following five case studies illustrate the many different uses of galvanizing and its important characteristics from durability to its practicality.  Two of the case studies detail recently completed life cycle analysis.

 

Life Cycle Analysis of a Multistorey Car Park

 

Situation

Comparison between corrosion protection systems for a steel car park on the basis of a life cycle assessment.

Objectives

Ascertain life cycle comparisons for a steel structure to provide corrosion protection for 60 years.

Results

The contributory factors for the hot dip galvanizing system are lower in all effect categories than for the painted system. Hot dip galvanizing is distinguished by lower consumption of resources and less pollution throughout its service life.

Conclusion

The study shows that life cycle assessment is a meaningful method, based on actual practice of environmental comparison of products. The hot dip galvanizing corrosion prevention system displays lower environmental impact for a steel structure
